Diablo Vista Park is one of Danville’s five beloved community parks. Residents often refer to this park as “snake park” for the distinguishing serpent feature in the children’s playground although it was originally designed to be a dragon (fun fact). It is accessible from both Crow Canyon Road along its western frontage and along Tassajara Ranch Drive along its northern frontages and set against the backdrop of open space and West Alamo Creek along its eastern boundary.

This capital improvement project involves two integrated components:

1. Renovation of the existing children’s play areas; and
2. Incorporation of a multi-sport skate park, adjacent to the play areas along the eastern (creek facing) edge of the park.

At its completion, the integrated recreational space will be able to accommodate a wide range of ages, abilities, and unstructured play. The overarching goal is to create a public use for essential community connection and interaction.

Background

Play area renovations are a routine part of the Town’s 5-Year Capital Improvement Program (CIP) efforts. Unique to this renovation is the addition of a multi-sport skate feature, a direct outcome of the 2017 Parks, Recreation and Arts Strategic Plan that looked at a broad spectrum of community needs. The chosen park location is the result of a feasibility analysis and extensive feedback from Danville residents and facility users during a public process that spanned over two years, from late 2017 to late 2019.     The Capital Improvement Program (CIP) includes projects to improve Diablo Vista Park. CIP Project B-560 to replace and upgrade the existing children’s play area, and CIP Project B-616 would construct a new multi-sport skatepark. In 2021, these two CIP projects were combined bid in the spring of 2024. Town Staff recommended awarding the construction contract to the low bidder, however, before the contract was awarded, the second bidder raised concerns and both bidders submitted protest challenging each other’s bid. As a result, the Town Council rejected both bids at its July 2, 2024, meeting. At an August 13, 2024, Study Session, the Town Council reviewed alternatives, including re-bidding the combined project or separating it into two separate bids. Ultimately, they decided to revise the design and bid documents to allow the children’s play area and skatepark to be bid and constructed separately. Both projects will be re-bid in 2025.

    The final engineering design plans and bid package are nearing completion! The Town is expected to be ready to put the project out to bid in May 2024. Renovation of the existing children’s play areas; and Incorporation of a multi-sport skate park, adjacent to the play areas along the eastern (creek facing) edge of the park.

    The Diablo Vista Park Renovation project aims to create an integrated recreational space to accommodate a wide range of ages, abilities, and interests. There are two key components to the project: renovation of the existing play areas and a multi-sport skate park.

    We would like the community's input on these two components, through a short survey. The survey will be open through January 23, and the results will be presented during the Parks, Recreation, and Arts Commission meeting in April.
