Diablo Vista Park is one of Danville’s five beloved community parks. Residents often refer to this park as “snake park” for the distinguishing serpent feature in the children’s playground although it was originally designed to be a dragon (fun fact). It is accessible from both Crow Canyon Road along its western frontage and along Tassajara Ranch Drive along its northern frontages and set against the backdrop of open space and West Alamo Creek along its eastern boundary.
This capital improvement project involves two integrated components:
1. Renovation of the existing children’s play areas; and 2. Incorporation of a multi-sport skate park, adjacent to the play areas along the eastern (creek facing) edge of the park.
At its completion, the integrated recreational space will be able to accommodate a wide range of ages, abilities, and unstructured play. The overarching goal is to create a public use for essential community connection and interaction.
Background
Play area renovations are a routine part of the Town’s 5-Year Capital Improvement Program (CIP) efforts. Unique to this renovation is the addition of a multi-sport skate feature, a direct outcome of the 2017 Parks, Recreation and Arts Strategic Plan that looked at a broad spectrum of community needs. The chosen park location is the result of a feasibility analysis and extensive feedback from Danville residents and facility users during a public process that spanned over two years, from late 2017 to late 2019. Information on this effort is available in this project’s document library.

This project aims to create an integrated recreational space to accommodate a wide range of ages, abilities, and interests. There are two key components to the project: renovation of the existing play areas and a multi-sport skate park.
We would like the community's input on these two components, through this survey. The survey will be open through January 20, and the results will be presented during the Parks, Recreation, and Arts Commission meeting in April.

Community Needs Identified
Diablo Vista Park Renovation is currently at this stage
Danville Town Council adopts 2017 Parks, Recreation and Arts Strategic Plan which identified a skate park as an unmet community need.
Feasibility Study and Community Engagement
this is an upcoming stage for Diablo Vista Park Renovation
June 2017 - Town Council appropriates funding for a skate park feasibility study.
December 2017 - Parks & Leisure Services Commission (PLSC) conducts site analysis (reviewed, evaluated, and scored) of each park as a potential site.
February 2018 – PLSC conducts a study session to discuss and take community input on potential location of skate park.
September 2018 - Town Council accepts the feasibility study without a specific location. Future consideration of a skate feature would be considered when sites are identified, and funds are available.
September 2019 - Community responses (1,071) from an online survey shows majority support for a multi- sport skate park.
October 2019 - Town Council accepts an updated feasibility study and identified Diablo Vista Park as the preferred location, consistent with the community feedback.
Capital Funding
this is an upcoming stage for Diablo Vista Park Renovation
June 2020 – Multi-sport skate park is incorporated into the 2021/22 Capital Improvement Program (B-616). Design phase awaits additional funding.
October 2021 – Danville Town Council appropriates a portion of the Coronavirus Local Fiscal Recovery Funds received under the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 (“ARPA funds”) to fully fund the multi-sport skate park (B-616).
June 2022 – Diablo Vista Park children’s play areas, scheduled for renovation, is combined with the multi-sport skate park into a single effort given their proximity to each other.
Conceptual Design & Community Outreach
this is an upcoming stage for Diablo Vista Park Renovation
October 2022 – Town Council awards design contract. Project team is assembled. Preliminary work, including site topographic survey, begins.
December 2022 – Presentation to Parks, Recreation & Arts Commission (PRAC) on project scope, timeline and approach.
Winter 2023 – Community and recreation user input on park features. Schematic design to reflect community and survey feedback. PRAC would provide feedback on schematic design, community and recreation user feedback, as well as an estimate of probable costs.
