Sycamore Valley Road Repaving Underway

One of Danville’s largest pavement projects in recent years is now underway on Sycamore Valley Road.

Crews are repaving approximately 1.3 miles of Sycamore Valley Road, from Camino Tassajara to the I-680 area. The project covers approximately 500,000 square feet of pavement, including all travel lanes, bike lanes and shoulders.

Work began earlier this week and is expected to be completed by the end of October, weather permitting, followed by final striping once the new pavement has fully set.

What to Expect

Sycamore Valley Road varies from four to eight lanes along the project area, so crews will work along the roadway one lane at a time along the entire . The repaving process includes several steps:

  1. Grinding: Crews remove the top few inches of existing pavement.
  2. Recycling the roadway: Using a process called Cold-in-Place recycling, crews grind additional existing asphalt, recycle it on site, and compact it to create a strong base for the new roadway. By reusing existing pavement material in place, this process reduces the amount of material that needs to be hauled away and the amount of new material needed for construction, making it a more sustainable approach to roadway rehabilitation.
  3. New pavement: A new top layer of asphalt is installed.
  4. Striping: Once the pavement has fully set, crews will return to complete final roadway/bike lane striping.

Work will generally take place between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. One lane will be closed in the active work area, but Sycamore Valley Road will remain open in both directions throughout the project. Drivers should expect delays and allow extra time when traveling through the area.

Sycamore Valley Road is one of Danville’s lowest-rated major streets based on its Pavement Condition Index (PCI), which is used to evaluate roadway conditions and prioritize pavement maintenance. This project represents a significant investment in one of the Town’s major roadways and will provide a smoother, refreshed roadway for drivers and cyclists.
