Town Breaks Ground on Diablo Road Trail

Project 36 years in the making will finish connection from Danville to Mount Diablo State Park.
Local officials gathered today for the Diablo Road Trail Project groundbreaking ceremony, celebrating a 0.9 mile paved multi-purpose trail that will offer a safe and scenic route for pedestrians and cyclists alike. Located along the south side of Diablo Road, from Fairway Drive to approximately 400 feet west of Avenida Nueva, the trail will connect the existing 0.5-mile Diablo Road Trail, also known as the Barbara Hale Trail, to the new 0.7-mile trail built as part of the Magee Preserve development.
“Over 36 years ago, we were standing here, envisioning this trail,” said Danville Mayor Renee Morgan at the event. “Over the years, local leaders, residents, and partner organizations have worked together to turn that early idea into today’s reality. This trail represents connection, access, and preservation – values that define the Danville community and our County.”
The Diablo Road Pedestrian Trail and Drainage Improvements Project (CIP No. C-055) was initially identified in the Town’s 1989 Townwide Trails Master Plan, and supports policies contained in the Town of Danville 2030 General Plan, 2021 Town-wide Bicycle Master Plan, 2017 Parks, Arts and Recreation Strategic Plan. The project creates the final section of a 2.1-mile, 8-foot-wide paved Class 1 multi-use trail along the southern shoulder of Diablo Road, improving connections between Green Valley Road and Blackhawk Road, and expanding access to Mount Diablo State Park.
The project budget is $5.2 million, with $4.7 million provided through the Contra Costa Transportation Authority Measure J Transportation Sales Tax fund. Initial project work in 2025 will focus on removing old fencing and installing construction fencing, which is not anticipated to impact traffic on Diablo Road. This work will continue through December 2026, with work paused from November through March to avoid the rainy season. Message boards will be posted 72 hours in advance to notify the public of scheduled work.
