Expect Delays on Diablo Rd. During Diablo Road Multi-Use Trail Construction

The largest and most impactful phase of construction is now underway on the Diablo Road Multi-Use Trail, which involves placement of large retaining walls adjacent to Green Valley Creek. This phase of construction will continue through approximately October 15 and will require daytime traffic control on Diablo Road between Fairway Drive and Alameda Diablo. The Diablo Road Multi-Use Trail project is expected to be completed in full by December 2026, which will ultimately connect the Barbara Hale Trail to Mount Diablo State Park.
During work hours, one of the two travel lanes on Diablo Road will be closed, reducing traffic to a single alternating lane through the work zone. Traffic in each direction will take turns proceeding through the area, and vehicles entering from Calle Arroyo will also be controlled as part of the traffic operation. As a result, motorists should expect significant delays during the morning and afternoon commute, particularly during school drop-off and pick-up times.
Schools Most Likely to Be Affected
The following schools are expected to experience the greatest traffic impacts:
- Monte Vista High School
- Los Cerros Middle School
- Green Valley Elementary School
- Athenian School
- St. Timothy’s Preschool
- Traffic backups may also affect travel to and from Vista Grande Elementary School.
Plan Ahead
Motorists are encouraged to:
- Allow extra travel time during weekday morning and afternoon commutes.
- Leave earlier than usual when traveling to affected schools.
- Consider alternate routes when practical if not traveling to the affected schools.
Town staff will be monitoring traffic conditions throughout construction and adjusting traffic control operations during school commute periods to help keep vehicles moving as efficiently as possible.
The Diablo Road Multi-Use Trail Project will create the final connection between the Barbara Hale Trail and Mount Diablo State Park, completing a long-awaited regional trail link. For project information and construction updates, visit the Town’s Diablo Road Multi-Use Trail Project page.
