Arts District Maker Space & Town Green Pavilion

Local officials gathered today to break ground on two new community spaces in Downtown Danville: the Town Green Pavilion and Art District Makers Space. Located side-by-side near the Danville Library and Town Green, the projects will create new opportunities for residents and visitors to gather, connect, create and experience community.

“Today marks an exciting milestone for Downtown Danville,” said Danville Mayor Newell Arnerich at the event. “These are two distinct projects, but they share a common purpose: creating welcoming spaces where people can come together. Whether it’s enjoying a concert on the Town Green or discovering something new in an art class, these spaces will give our community even more ways to connect and experience Downtown.”

The new permanent Pavilion will enhance the Town Green, one of Danville’s most popular community gathering places and home to Concerts in the Park, community celebrations, special events and performances. The Pavilion will feature an elevated platform stage with a permanent solid roof and integrated lighting, creating a more functional and welcoming venue for concerts, performances and other community programming.

Adjacent to the Town Green and Library on Front Street, the new Art District Makers Space will provide a dedicated location for hands-on creativity, art, workshops, classes and community programming for all ages. The 2,100-square-foot studio will include a 735-square-foot patio and a flexible interior that can function as one large classroom or two separate classrooms. The facility will support a variety of hands-on arts programming, including painting, pottery and ceramics, and will include a kiln.

As part of Danville’s Arts District, the Makers Space will create a new destination for creativity and learning while complementing the Library, Town Green and surrounding Downtown amenities. Together, the Pavilion and Makers Space will expand opportunities for arts, recreation and community programming, strengthen the Town Green and Arts District as a community hub, and encourage residents and visitors to spend time Downtown.

The combined project budget is $3.8 million, with funding provided through the Town’s annual Capital Improvement Program.

The new Town Green Pavilion will be constructed at 420 Front Street and is an open-air structure that is approximately 1,211 square feet. The pavilion is designed for community events, performances, and gatherings, and will replace the existing bandstand.

The Arts District Makers Space will be located at 282 Front Street. The building will be approximately 2,164 square feet and is intended to be a flexible space for recreation programing and arts and culture including art classes, workshops, and gallery space.

Construction for both projects is scheduled to begin in August of 2026.

Project Timeline:

• Community needs are identified in the Parks, Recreation, & Arts Strategic Plan Update.

• Callander Associates, Town Staff, the Parks, Recreation, and Arts Commission, and the Arts Advisory Board collaborate in the development of the Town Green and Arts District Master Plan while gathering community input.

• Town Council adopts Town Green and Arts District Master Plan.

• Town Council Awards Design Contract to Callander Associates for CIP B-628: Town Green and Arts District.

• Conceptual designs are reviewed and feedback is provided at the March 13, 2024, joint Parks, Recreation, and Arts Commission and Arts Advisory Board meeting.

• The Design Review Board reviews and provides comments on the architecture, landscaping, colors, and materials of the Town Green Pavilion at the February 13, 2025, regular meeting.

• Final Project Design Complete
