History

The Arts District Maker Space and Town Green Pavilion are two high-priority projects identified in the Danville Parks, Recreation, & Arts Strategic Plan Update (2017).

The Danville Parks, Recreation, & Arts Strategic Plan Update established a long-range vision and course of action for creating and sustaining a high quality, interconnected system of parks, recreation, and arts facilities, services, and programs. The 2017 Strategic Plan Update identifies vision principles, strategic directions, and recommendations for guiding the Town’s investment in parks, recreation, and arts.

One implementation measure laid out in the 2017 Strategic Plan Update was the recommendation to develop a Town Green and Arts District Master Plan. This initiative aimed to enhance the Town Green and Front Street area from the Community Center north to the Village Theatre. To accomplish this, the Town decided to retain the firm Callander Associates for consulting services in 2019 to collaborate with Town Staff, the Danville Parks, Recreation, and Arts Commission, and the Danville Arts Advisory Board during the preparation and review process of the Town Green and Arts District Master Plan. During development of the Town Green and Arts District Master Plan, community input was gathered through community intercept events, an online questionnaire, targeted stakeholder interviews, focus groups, a community workshop, a staff strategy session, and joint commission meetings. After careful review, the Parks, Recreation, and Arts Commission recommended Town Council’s approval of the Town Green and Arts District Master Plan.

The Danville Town Council adopted the Town Green and Arts District Master Plan at the November 19, 2019, regular meeting. As a result, projects B-628: Town Green and Arts District and B-629: Town Studio (Arts District Maker Space) were added into the Town’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP) with allocated funds for design and construction aligned with the Town Green and Arts District Master Plan.

On April 28, 2026, the City Clerk opened construction contract bids for the Arts District Maker Space and Town Green Pavilion (CIP No. B-628 & B-629). The Danville Town Council awarded a construction contract to Stronger Building Services at the May 19, 2026, regular meeting.
